Smart Start Teen Driving Program

Drive Safe. Drive Smart.

Get your teenagers’ driving career off to a great start with our Smart Start Program. You’ll find helpful tips on Virginia driving laws and a review of safe driving habits, as well as a pledge to drive smart.

And because safe driving is so important, we’ve added an incentive— get an extra 5% off premiums for new drivers under 18 who successfully complete the course.

It's only 12 questions. If you paid attention to the video and reviewed the Safe Driver Booklet, there's no doubt you'll get a perfect score! You will need to complete the quiz in one session, or you’ll have to start over. So make sure your mobile device* is charged, your laptop plugged in, and keep your browser window open! Before we get started

  1. You and your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have watched the Smart Start video and reviewed the Safe Driver Booklet.
  2. You are only eligible to enter into the Smart Start program once.
  3. You must be accident-free and conviction-free to enter this program.
  4. You must be under 18 years of age to be eligible for this program.
  5. For the policy period after you and your parent(s) or legal guardians(s) sign the SSP contract, you must meet the following conditions:
    • Have and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license when entering the program and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license for the continuous program period. Exception: a non-Virginia driver’s license shall be permitted if the youthful operator is a dependent of a parent or legal guardian who is an active-duty member of the armed forces stationed in Virginia.
    • Be listed as a driver on a VFBIS private passenger auto liability policy.
    • Remain accident-free and conviction-free
  6. We also ask you to promise the following:
    • Put safety first.
    • Use your seatbelt.
    • Don’t drink and drive.
    • Drive defensively.
    • Obey Virginia’s ban on all cell phone use while driving (until you’re 18 years old).
    • Remain accident-free and conviction-free.

We need some information from you, so you can be registered in the Smart Start Program (SSP). This will help us stay in touch with you and make sure your agent is able to apply your policy discounts.
